Awards, Achievements and
Accolades
2009
- Volunteer and board member Althea Worthy is named a Community Champion by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
- NHCO service coordinator Natalie Klaum is a recipient of the Golden Eagle Award, presented by the $1 Energy Fund to individuals who go above and beyond to help others.
- NHCO is a recipient of this year's Good Government Award given by the League of Women Voters. NHCO is recognized for the Millvale Satellite expansion project with the Borough of Millvale.
- NHCO is the winner of a LIHEAP Challenge with the prize being lunch with Steeler great Franco Harris! NHCO was selected because staff and volunteers did an outstanding job making LIHEAP referrals for low-income customers during this past heating season.
- Jim Loscar, a valued operations department volunteer, is named a Community Champion by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
2008
- NHCO service recipient receives the Self Sufficiency
Award from Community Action Association of PA, with only
one award given in each county to an individual who moves from
poverty to economic stability (1999, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007 as
well).
2007
- Jill Herman, longtime lead volunteer for NHCO's Loaves &
Fishes Food Pantry, is named a Community Champion
by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
- NHCO service recipient receives the Self Sufficiency
Award from Community Action Association of PA, with only
one award given in each county to an individual who moves from
poverty to economic stability (2000, 2001, 2003, 2006 as well).
- Volunteer Jean Muth is honored
for her dedication and volunteerism at the National Association
of Women Business Owners Pittsburgh Chapter's Awards
Luncheon.
2006
- Family Savings Account (FSA) program lead volunteer Marleen
Kasbee is named a Community Champion by the Post-Gazette.
- Allegheny County Council issues a proclamation
commending NHCO for its "dedication and commitment to assisting
the dislocated families affected by Hurricane Katrina. Their response
in Allegheny County has been characterized by unprecedented collaboration,
a spirit of good will and cooperation which serves as an inspiration
to us all."
- Family Savings Account (FSA) program lead volunteer Marleen
Kasbee is honored for her dedication and volunteerism at the National
Association of Women Business Owners Pittsburgh Chapter’s
Awards Luncheon.
2005
- Volunteer Jason Altmire receives the ARCADIA Award from
Northern Allegheny County Chamber of Commerce for professionalism
and excellence in community service.
- Volunteer Barb Barcousky is named a Community Champion
by the Post-Gazette for longtime service NB Food Pantry.
- NHCO is one of three finalists for the prestigious Alfred
W. Wishart Jr. Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management.
- Director of Operations Dianne Buirge is named a finalist for
CFO of the Year, presented by the Pittsburgh
Business Times.
2004
- Volunteer Jimmy Marshall is named a Community Champion
by the Post- Gazette for service at one of NHCO’s food pantries.
- Volunteer Lynn Landis receives the ARCADIA Award
from Northern Allegheny County Chamber of Commerce for professionalism
and excellence in community service.
- NHCO receives Managing for Excellence Award
($25,000) from United Way of Allegheny County and Robert Morris
University’s Bayer Center for Nonprofit Management.
- NHCO is featured for the second consecutive year in a speech
by President George W. Bush.
- NHCO is one of 14 organizations nationwide to receive a Compassion
Capital Fund grant. NHCO will use the $234,000 to mentor
ten other grassroots organizations in board, staff, program and
resource development.
- NHCO is one of three finalists for the prestigious Alfred
W. Wishart Jr. Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management.
2003
- Board President Ruth Graham is named a Community Champion
by the Post Gazette.
- Board member Donald Gates, JD, receives Pro Bono Attorney
of the Year Award from the Allegheny County Bar Association.
- Board Secretary Jason Altmire is named one of Pittsburgh’s
“Top 40 Under 40,” in part for his
volunteer service at NHCO.
- Former client and now-volunteer Dee Rogers receives the first-ever
Betty Ann Simon Memorial Award and volunteer Flossie Dickson received a Golden Eagle Award
from the $ Energy Fund.
- NHCO is featured in a nationally televised speech given by
President George W. Bush as an outstanding example of compassion
and effectiveness.
2002
- Board member Alicia Dal Lago receives ATHENA Award
from the Northern Allegheny County Chamber of Commerce in part
for establishing a scholarship program at NHCO.
- Board member Mari-Lou Wong-Chong is named a Community
Champion by the Post- Gazette.
2001
- Services staff is honored with Pennsylvania Golden
Eagle Award from the $1 Energy Fund as best in the state.
2000
- Board President Mitzie Novak receives the Service Above
Self award from the McCandless Rotary.
- Board Past President Don Hook receives the United Way’s
Senator John Heinz Alexis de Tocqueville Award with $10,000
prize for NHCO.
1999
- Board member David Moran, JD, receives Pro Bono Attorney
of the Year Award from the Allegheny County Bar Association
for NHCO’s “Ask the Attorney” program.
- Board Secretary Shirley McIlvried is named Nurse of
the Year by the PA Nurses Association.
- Board members Ruth Graham and Lynn Landis are honored by (then)
St. Sen. Melissa Hart as Outstanding Citizens.
1997 and earlier
- 1997 - Executive Director Fay Morgan receives ATHENA
Award from the Northern Allegheny Chamber of Commerce
for professionalism and excellence in community service .
- 1994 – Outreach Coordinator Cindy Gilch is named Person
of the Year by the North Hills News Record.
- 1989 – Executive Director Debbie Busteed is honored by
the Private Industry Council with their Community Service Award.
- 1989– NHCO is named Organization of the Year
by the Northern Allegheny County Chamber of Commerce.
