Services to Neighbors in Need
NHCO addresses the basic human needs of local individuals
and families in poverty, hardship and crisis. Specifically, in 2006-07,
we helped 5,232 families.
- 15% have disabilities (60% of those report having a physical
disability)
- 18% are receiving food stamps
- 47% are High School graduates or have earned a GED, 12% are
drop outs
- 74% are female; 26% are male
- 89% are Caucasian, 9% are Black/African American and <1%
each are Asian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern and Native American
- 12% report substance abuse/addiction problems
- 62% have family as part of their support system; 12% have no
family, congregational or friend support
- 145 different zip codes represented, with 15202 (Bellevue)
being the highest at 14%, followed by 15209 (Millvale) at 12%
- 37% are employed either part- or full-time; 27% unemployed;
16% retired
- 31% report employment/wages as their income source, and 30%
collect SSI/SSD
- 39% have reported income <100% of the federal
poverty guidelines, another 10% has income <125% and 10%
report having no source of income
- 58% have a personal auto for transportation, 26% rely on public
transportation and 9% don’t have access to any transportation
