A Summer Intern’s Calling to NHCO

My name is Colin Hurst, and I’m a summer intern at NHCO. I graduated from Hampton High School, and I attend Endicott College in Massachusetts as a communication major. Growing up, my parents made sure to instill the value of people helping people and loving their neighbors in my mind. My family involved my brother and I in decisions regarding our charitable contributions, which had a profound impact on me from a young age. Partly due to this, I always felt a calling towards the world of nonprofit, as if I owe it to the world that has given me so much to give back in any way I can.

This calling is what led me to NHCO. I always knew of the good work this organization does on a day-to-day basis to improve the lives of my neighbors, often times people that most wouldn’t even be aware are in need of help. If there’s a flood threatening people’s livelihoods, or if a family can’t afford food for their children, NHCO is always there to lend a hand. It’s a crucial organization for a modern community to have. Living at home for the summer, it was time for me to find an internship. I knew I wanted to get a foot in the door of the nonprofit industry, and NHCO felt like a perfect fit.

It was an honor to meet some of our donors at the Lauren Billy Memorial Golf Outing, which happened to be my first day of work for the organization. It was a wonderful day, with overcast weather that didn’t dare to hurt our spirits with a single drop of rain (in my opinion, the perfect weather for a round of golf). Everyone was happy to briefly talk to me, I had lots of entertaining interactions, and many were eager to donate. Witnessing the generosity of so many people that I may have come across at a local grocery store sometime in the past was an amazing experience. Everyone that passed me that day was so happy to be there, playing a game loved by so many, all while supporting a good cause.

In my brief time here so far, I've met some amazing people who have the same goal in their minds and hearts: to improve the lives of as many of our community members as possible. Regardless of any differences anyone in our community has, NHCO wants nothing more than to help, and to spread love with open arms.
