Gnome Home Expresses Heartfelt Appreciation for NHCO Coordinator

The people we serve often express their gratitude in simple yet meaningful ways—a personal thank you, a thoughtful email, or a handwritten postcard. Shayna, a struggling wife and mother, was so moved by NHCO’s assistance that she handcrafted a gnome home for Kerry, NHCO’s Allison Park Team Leader. Kerry’s office is adorned with mythical characters, particularly Irish folklore, making this gift a particularly perfect fit.

“Her thoughtfulness despite her own challenges shows me that everyone has struggles and helping others is not only a gift, but a calling,” Shayna said.

Shayna’s husband is dying of cancer. Caring for him and her children put them behind on all their utility bills. Although she works part-time, her income simply isn’t enough to keep up with the mounting expenses. Through various programs, Kerry was able to get the bills under control.

"There are wonderful people willing to help in the time of need,” she realized after getting assistance from NHCO while her family is going through this stressful and sometimes devastating situation.

Along with helping with utility bills, NHCO provided her kids with holiday presents, winter coats, and - most importantly - peace of mind during life’s biggest challenges.

“Just keeping the electricity and gas on has been such a blessing,” Shayna said. “And the care that you all have shown us for the past 6 years is so appreciated and means more than you know.’

Over time, Shayna and Kerry developed a bond that often forms when people share deeply personal experiences. Within three years, Kerry lost her dad, husband and mom, so she was particularly sympathetic towards Shayna’s situation.

“I was a caregiver for each one of them and held their hand throughout their struggles,” Kerry said with sympathy. “But I somehow found the strength to show up everyday for the other responsibilities in my life. Shayna does the same thing, she's caring for her husband, getting him to and from medical appointments and treatments, all the while juggling her other responsibilities of working, being a mom and a daughter. Shayna does it all calmly and with a smile.”

At NHCO, it’s a privilege to be in the business of people helping people — no thank you needed. Yet, when it happens, it’s a heartfelt reminder of the vital work we do in our community.

“When Shayna gave me the gnome house that she made, I was so surprised, humbled and so in love with it,” Kerry said. “It’s adorable and I truly cherish it.”

Because of our work and your support, Shayna can comfort her husband and care for her kids.

“You all at North Hills Community Outreach have demonstrated over and over the goodness that exists in this world,” Shayna added.

When times are tough, everyone should have a place to turn to for help. That's why North Hills Community Outreach is here. A gift to NHCO helps provide comfort, optimism and connection to people like Shayna, her husband and kids, along with thousands of others in our community. Please consider donating.
